PROCESS AUTOMATION
Automate pick-and-place and material handling.
We automate picking, transferring and placing your parts. Pick-and-place robots, grippers and position detection are matched to part presentation, surfaces and transfer to the next process.
TYPICAL CHALLENGES
Part orientation, gripping and conveyor motion.
Parts in a tray behave differently from parts on a conveyor or in a randomly filled bin. We assess position detection, accessible gripping areas and the time available for each movement. Delicate surfaces and overlapping parts are included in the trials.
01
PART ORIENTATION
Workpiece orientation and position detection
Loose, overlapping or reflective parts are handled using suitable singulation or robust 2D/3D position detection.
02
GRIPPING PROCESS
Grip monitoring and controlled placement
Gripping surfaces, centre of gravity, component tolerances, double-pick risks and presence detection are validated for every variant.
03
MOVING PRODUCT FLOW
Conveyor tracking and robot coordination
In line-tracking applications, encoder quality, camera field of view, queue management and the pick window determine whether parts can be handled reliably as belt occupancy changes.
TECHNICAL SOLUTION CONCEPT
Detecting, gripping and placing parts.
Depending on part presentation, we combine defined trays, feeding technology, 2D vision, 3D bin picking or conveyor tracking. Grip monitoring and reject logic prevent defects from passing unnoticed to the next process.
01
Test part orientation and surface properties using real sample parts
02
Engineer the gripper with sensors, vacuum monitoring or force control
03
Implement robust vision-to-robot calibration and coordinate correction
04
Define buffer, priority and reject logic for the material flow
ENGINEERING CRITERIA
Part presentation, surfaces and achievable cycle time.
Defined gripping surfaces and accessible target placement form the basis. Random positions, entanglement and delicate surfaces may require additional feeding or sensing. Part presentation, grippers and available cycle time determine cost and scope.
01
PART PRESENTATION
Tray, conveyor or random bin?
The level of part organisation determines complexity, achievable cycle time and the required vision technology.
02
SURFACE
Glossy, dark, transparent or textured?
Material and geometry influence lighting, camera selection, depth sensing and usable gripping surfaces.
03
CYCLE TIME
Available pick window
Image acquisition, processing, robot motion and gripper response are calculated against conveyor speed and part spacing.
04
FAULT HANDLING
Handling parts that cannot be picked
Retry strategy, residual-quantity monitoring, rejection and operator intervention are deliberately incorporated.
HOW WE WORK
Test detection and gripping with actual parts.
For Christ Packing Systems GmbH & Co. KG, we designed a handling and gripping system and a robot cell for depalletising and repalletising.
01
Evaluate the part range in practice
Sample parts, orientation distribution, tolerances, surfaces and permitted contact areas form the technical basis.
02
Conduct vision and gripping trials
Critical variants are tested using suitable lighting, cameras and gripping principles before the cell concept is defined.
03
Test material flow under realistic loading
During ramp-up, we test conveyor speed, congestion, failed picks, variant changes and transfer to downstream processes.
Planning your application
Questions about pick-and-place and part handling.
Part presentation, detection and gripping together determine a handling sequence. These questions help develop a suitable concept for actual part positions and the existing material flow.
- Repeated transfer, sorting, feeding and filling are candidates where parts can be gripped reliably and placed at defined positions.
- Weight, geometry, gripping areas and permitted contact determine the gripper. We test entanglement and delicate surfaces with sample parts.
- Required cycle time and transfer to downstream processes determine the appropriate setup.
- A defined tray establishes part positions and can reduce detection effort.
- 2D vision can determine position and orientation within one plane. Varying heights and spatially random parts may require 3D detection.
- On moving conveyors, detection and robot motion are synchronised with belt movement. Lighting and sensors are tested against the actual surfaces.
- Presence detection, vacuum monitoring or force monitoring can check whether a part has been picked correctly.
- We define retries, rejection or operator interventions for hidden gripping areas, double picks and residual quantities.
- Transfer to the next process is coordinated with its feedback signals. Fault scenarios are included in production ramp-up tests.
- Gripping areas, dimensions, surfaces and target placement must be known for each variant.
- We assess which parts the existing gripper and detection system can handle, and where adjustments are needed.
- Part changes, varying loading conditions and transfer positions are tested during ramp-up.
- Replenishment, cleaning and residual quantities are included in the operating concept.
- Belt speed, part spacing, vision processing and gripper response must be coordinated. Buffers can accommodate variations in loading.
- We test congestion, failed picks and interruptions under realistic loading. Grippers, sensors and program versions need ongoing attention.
- Samples or drawings, dimensions, weights and details of delicate surfaces are useful.
- Photos or a video show actual part presentation and target placement. Part spacing, belt speed and required throughput add context.
- Send what you already have. We clarify open questions about variants, interfaces and available space together.
